UIDAI introduces ‘Virtual ID’ to address privacy concerns

  1. In the term of the privacy the UIDAI on Wednesday has launched the new concept of ‘Virtual ID’ that Aadhaar-card holder can generate from its website and give for various purposes, including SIM verification, instead of sharing the actual 12-digit biometric ID.
  2. In this, there will be the option for the user to not sharing their Aadhaar number at the time of authentication.
  3. The Virtual ID, that has the number of 16-digit number, together with biometrics of the user would give any authorised agency like a mobile company, limited details like name, address and photograph, which are enough for any verification.
  4. Officials said any user can create many of the Virtual IDs as he or she wants. The older ID gets automatically cancelled once a fresh one is generated.
  5. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has also introduced the concept of ‘limited KYC’ under which it will only provide need-based or limited details of a user to an authorised agency that is providing a particular service, say, a telco.

Railways launches SFOORTI App for freight managers

  1. In the term of the frame of the control of the traffic flows and optimize freight operations, Ministry of Railways has launched Smart Freight Operation Optimisation & Real Time Information (SFOORTI) App for Freight Managers.
  2. By this application, there will be the help of the monitoring and managing freight business using Geographic Information System (GIS) Views and Dashboard. SFOORTI Application will help track movement of freight trains on Geographic Information System (GIS).
  3. Both passenger and freight trains can be tracked over Zones/Divisions/ Sections in single GIS View. Freight business that can also be monitored along with Comparative Analysis of Zonal/Divisional Traffic.
  4. The app will help in analysis of new traffic captured and traffic lost and provides a Bird’s eye view of all Freight Assets in a single window.

  1. India’s first plant to change the coal to synthetic gas has been going to install in the Odisha under the supervision of state-run gas transmission utility GAIL, the Petroleum Minister said on Thursday.
  2. “GAIL India is planning to set up a coal-to-synthetic gas plant in Odisha. This synthetic gas is expected to be cheaper than natural gas,” the Minister said.
  3. Till now we have not been able to convert any coal to gas. GAIL India is in talks with the Ministry of Fertiliser for the same,” he said, adding India has a poor record in this area of developing alternative fuels as a way to cut oil imports.
  4. “A new bio-fuels policy is going to come soon that will detail things like investments, incentives, the maximum assured price etc for the sector,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the conference, noting the potential of bio-fuels that are mostly produced by recycling agricultural and urban waste.

Niti Aayog to provide rankings to 115 aspirational districts

  1. Government think-tank Niti Aayog has been come up with new ranking of the 115 aspirational districts by April this year.
  2. In the term of the presenting of the ‘Transformation of Aspirational Districts’ conference, which was held earlier this month, the Aayog said it will rank the 115 backward districts on 10 parameters which will include nutrition, education, health.
  3. According to the presentation, that was written at the Niti Aayog’s website on Thursday, by this presentation there will be the setup of the mechanism for real-time monitoring of government’s development programmes by April.
  4. The government think-tank said it will create a dashboard which will reflect the change in ranking of districts on continuous basis by the end of March this year.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) on Friday has launched a Cartosat-2 series weather observation satellite, successfully and with that 30 other spacecraft, using its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C40), that has given the uplift by the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
  2. “PSLV successfully launches 31 satellites in a single flight. Isro’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, in its 42nd flight, successfully launched the 710-kg Cartosat-2 series remote sensing satellite, along with 30 co-passenger satellites today (January 12, 2018) from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota,” Isro said in a statement on Friday.
  3. The PSLV-C40 with no issue has placed the Cartosat-2 series satellite in a sun synchronous orbit, Isro added. On Friday’s successful launch has come up with the four months after Isro’s PSLV-C39 failed following a technical snag involving its heat shield.
  4. Prime Minister Narendra Modi given the congratulation to the Isro scientists for the successful launch, saying the moment signified the country’s “bright future” in its space programme.
