1st Draft of National Register of Citizens in Assam Released

  1. The first session of the much-awaited National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam has listed 19 million people out of the 32.9 million applicants who comes in legal Indian citizens in the term of the main aim of the session that is the aimed at identifying illegal immigrants in the state that borders Bangladesh.
  2. “There is no need for anyone to panic. Other names are in various stages of verification and as soon as the verification is done, we will come out with another draft … Substantial progress has been made, but still lots of work need to be done,” Registrar General of India Sailesh said, releasing the first draft of 19 million names out of the total 32.9 applicants.
  3. “This (NRC) is unprecedented. There is no example in this country. I doubt if there is any other country in the world having such a complex methodology to determine the citizenship of the people,” the RGI told reporters.
  4. “We are working with an intention to publish an error-free draft. What time and when we will publish the next draft will be as per the Supreme Court guidance… We will be able to complete the entire process this year,” Sailesh said.
  5. “The process to verify the names is tedious. So there is a possibility that some names within a single family may not be there in the first draft. There is no need to panic as rest of the documents are under verification,” he added.

 

Women & Child Development Ministry Inaugurated Online Portal NARI

  1. In the term of the initiative of the way of empower women, the Minister of Women & Child Development, Smt Maneka Sanjay Gandhi has inaugurated an online portal NARI in New Delhi today. This has created and developed by the Ministry of Women & Child Development, the portal will provide women citizens with easy access to information on government schemes and initiatives for women.
  2. In the term to facilitate the NGOs and Civil Societies to interact with the Ministry of Women & Child Development, e-Samvad portal has also been developed which was inaugurated by the WCD Minister today. The Minister of State for Women & Child Development, Dr. Virendra Kumar was also present on the occasion.
  3. Speaking on the occasion, Smt Maneka Sanjay Gandhi said, “For the first time ever since Independence, women of the country will be able to access information about benefits being provided to them by the Government. The portal contains information about schemes being run by both Central as well as the States Governments.”
  4. “Through e-Samvad portal, NGOs and civil society can provide their feedback, suggestions, put up grievances, share best practices etc. Senior Officers within MWCD will be able to view the inputs/suggestions received for their concerned subject areas and appropriately respond to NGOs. This will help in formulation of effective policies and measures for welfare of women and children.”

 

Assamese and Manipuri Versions of PM Modi’s Official Website Launched

  1. The Assamese and Manipuri language versions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Official website, www.pmindia.gov.in, were has been launched on Monday. Because of this website they can now be accessed in Assamese and Manipuri in keeping with the requests from the citizens of the two states.
  2. With the launch, the PMINDIA website is now available in 11 regional languages namely Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu in addition to English and Hindi.

Jharkhand CM launches programme to provide electricity to all villages

  1. Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Monday has launched “Saubhagya Yojana”, a programme that would provide electricity to all the 29,376 villages in the state.
  2. Launching the “Saubhagya Yojana” here, Das said only 38 lakh households out of 68 lakh households in the state could get electricity in 67 years.
  3. He said”Now coal is being sent to other states for electricity, but by 2022 electricity would be generated from Jharkhand and provided to other states”. “The state was working with a vision and mission,” he said.
  4. Till the December 2018, the target is to provide electricity to the rest 17.64 lakh households, Das said adding people would get electricity 24×7, which would not only change the life of the people in the villages but also there would be a change in their thought, economic condition, education of their children and lift irrigation for the farmers.

 

Saudi Arabia, UAE Introduce VAT for First Time

  1. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates has launched the new value-added tax from Monday, that is firstly in the Gulf which has long prided itself on its tax-free, cradle-to-grave welfare system.
  2. Saudi Arabia compounded the New Year blow for motorists with an unannounced hike of up to 127 per cent in petrol prices with immediate effect from midnight.
  3. They are the latest in series of measures introduced by Gulf oil producers over the past two years to boost revenues and cut spending as a persistent slump in world prices has led to ballooning budget deficits.
  4. The five per cent sales tax applies to most goods and services and analysts project that the two governments could raise as much as $21 billion in 2018, equivalent to 2 per cent of GDP.

Vijay Keshav Gokhale Appointed Foreign Secretary

  1. Former ambassador to China and current secretary (economic relations), Vijay Keshav Gokhale, has been guven the name as India’s next foreign secretary. He will be take seat after the S Jaishankar whose extended tenure will end on January 28.
  2. The year 1981-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Gokhale is considered an expert on China. He has returned to the headquarters from China in October and was appointed as secretary (economic relations).
  3. Gokhale who is the only IFS to have served as India’s Representative both in Taiwan and in China, he has also served ad the high commissioner to Malaysia and ambassador in Germany. Proficient in Chinese, Gokhale’s recent experience in handling the Dokalam crisis in coordination with Jaishankar and NSA AK Doval will come in handy amid Beijing’s global ambitions that threatens India’s security interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
  4. Gokhale had earlier handled East Asia Division in the Ministry of External Affairs which covers India’s ties with China, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Mongolia and Taiwan. Known for keeping a low profile, Gokhale is often firm in his decisions.

 

Pankaj Jain Assumes Charge as IIFCL Managing Director

  1. Pankaj Jain, who is the Joint Secretary in the Department of Financial Services (DFS), has been taking the charge for the Managing Director of India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd (IIFCL).
  2. He will also serve as the IIFCL along with his present position as Joint Secretary at DFS. IIFCL is a state-owned company focused on infrastructure financing and development.
  3. The Government had in end December last year has assigned the additional charge of the post of Managing Director of IIFCL to Pankaj Jain, the year 1990 batch IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre.

 

SBI Reduces Base Rate and Benchmark Prime Lending Rates Each by 30 bps

  1. The State Bank of India on Monday has decreases the base rate and benchmark prime lending rates (BPLR) by 30 basis points each, which will benefit nearly 80 lakh customers on the old pricing regime.
  2. “We had done the rate review in the last week of December, and based on whatever deposits rates we had, our base rate was brought down by 30 basis points to 8.65 per cent now,” managing director for retail and digital banking, PK Gupta told reporters in a concall.
  3. “The MCLR was reduced earlier also as the gap between MCLR and base rate had become quite wide. This move will help in reducing that gap,” he said.
  4. “The revision will ensure transmission of reduction in the policy rates in the recent past,” he said.

Sathiyan surpasses Kamal to be highest-ranked Indian paddler

  1. The in-form G Sathiyan has get in the term of the legendary Sharath Kamal to be India’s highest- ranked player in the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rankings, that has also in the one of the nine players in the top-100.
  2. Sathiyan, who was also in the list of the top-100 bracket until a few months ago, is the leader today at world No. 49, thus pushing Kamal to the second spot at 51. Soumyajit Ghosh (58), Harmeet Desai (60), Sanil Shetty (68) and Anthony Amalraj (87) follow them.
  3. The ITTF rankings have undergone a change after the new system was approved in September 2017. The new simplified and comprehensive system provides for a more dynamic world ranking based on paddlers’ performance and results during the entire year.

OBITUARY

Eminent Urdu poet Anwar Jalapuri passes away at 71

  1. Eminent Urdu poet Anwar Jalalpuri, who was also known for his translation of the Bhagavad Gita from Hindi to Urdu, has been died at the age of 71 years on Tuesday following cardiac arrest, a hospital official said.
  2. “His condition worsened late Monday and he breathed his last around 11 a.m. on Tuesday,” a hospital representative said.
